A fire safety consultant has questioned whether hotel owners are suitably qualified to conduct their own fire risk assessments.
Independent consultant Alan Cox raised his concerns after taking part in a BBC undercover investigation into fire safety standards at 14 hotels.

The Co-op Group has been fined £250,000 for Fire Safety failings under the Regulatory Reform (fire safety) Order 2005.
The supermarket chain The Co-op Group has been fined GBP 250,000 after safety inspectors found that 38 of the firm's 41 stores in place were not compliant with fire-safety standards.

A teenage boy has died after being hit by a train, and another has suffered electrocution injuries, after an incident at a Kent railway station.
British Transport Police said the incident happened at Shoreham, at about 2200 BST on Wednesday.

12yr old boy is charged with 'sausage assault'
A 12-year-old boy was charged with assault and taken before the courts - for throwing a cocktail sausage.
The boy was accused of throwing the pork snack at a 74-year-old man in Woodhouse Park, south Manchester. He denied the charge in a hearing at a Manchester Youth Court, where the judge questioned the decision to prosecute.

The blaze tore through the Penhallow Hotel in Newquay just after midnight on Saturday.

Spy helicopter used at V Festival
A remote control "spy helicopter" has been helping police patrol a major music festival.
Staffordshire Police have been using the CCTV drone for the first time at the V Festival site this weekend. Officers said the remote controlled plane helped capture offenders at the festival site at Weston Park, on the border of Staffordshire and Shropshire.

Norfolk riot highlights yob behaviour
Authorities in Norfolk vowed on Monday to tackle "head on" yobs such as those who attacked a local police station over the weekend, amid widespread concern in the media about anti-social behaviour.
Councillor Steve Bett, chairman of the Norfolk Police Authority, said such behaviour would not be tolerated.
"We are going to take an extremely hard line with these events," he told BBC radio.
"We are going to get a lot more aggressive ... to people who behave in this manner."

£21,500 damages awarded to assaulted NHS Staff Nurse
A nurse has been awarded over GBP 21,000 damages after being attacked twice by the same patient.
Staff nurse Lucia Johnson was attacked by the male patient at Broadmoor high security psychiatric hospital in December 2002 and again the following July. In the first attack she received injuries to her nose and hand after having objects thrown at her, in the second she was punched in the face and shoulder.
"He was often violent, but in spite of the complaints made by members of staff he was not removed to a more secure unit where more members of staff would have been available to supervise or medicate him," Ms Johnson said.
West London Mental Health NHS Trust said the settlement of GBP 21,500 was agreed through the NHS Litigation Authority.

Training Focus - Summer 2007

2007 has witnessed further expansion of the Risks Contained training portfolio.  To enhance an already extensive training provision we have added several national qualifications encompassing a diverse range of subjects including British Safety Council Health and Safety awards, ASET Community Warden Certificate and the NCFE Level 2 Award for Event Stewards.  Risks Contained has also designed and develop two new Level 3 Awards in Physical Intervention and Handcuff Restraint and Physical Intervention for Security Specialists, both of these awards have been accredited by ASET Awards.

Physical Intervention Staff Training - Whose responsibility is it?  By Martin Farrow
A recent conversation with an event security staff provider left me somewhat speechless, after discussing the issue of physical intervention - or to be more precise the use of force by security staff engaged in event security operations.  He concluded that although it was inevitable that on occasions his staff may have to resort to the use of physical force to deal with a violent situation, they have never actually received formal training in the subject because the company insurance does not cover staff to use physical force!

Since our accreditation as an Approved Training Centre with ASET in February 2007, we have been working to develop two new and unique specialist security qualifications designed for professional security operatives who, by virtue of their role, may be required to physically intervene in situations involving potentially aggressive subjects.  These qualifications have been specifically designed to augment the training required to qualify for an SIA licence in all aspects of manned security.

Risks Contained endorsed to train British Safety Council qualifications
Risks Contained is now endorsed by the British Safety Council to deliver their portfolio of Level 2 Courses in Risk Assessments and Supervising Staff Safely.  These awards allows employers to get more of their staff properly qualified to carry out risk assessments, helping them to meet their legal obligations under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
