Aims

This in house course has been developed to provide competent trainers with the knowledge, understanding and skills to be able to safely and competently deliver a range of physical intervention techniques and associated factors.




The course is also unique due the fact that it also qualifies successful participants with the skills to teach handcuff restraint.

Techniques that are taught within the programme are under-pinned by legal, medical & moral considerations and have undergone scrutiny by a registered member of the Society of Expert Witnesses.

Successful completion of the course will enable the trainer to deliver accredited courses in physical intervention and handcuff restraint under the Risks Contained and EDI license scheme.

This course will be particularly required with introduction of Physical intervention to the door supervision syllabus in 2010.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course the delegate will better able to:

Interpret criminal law, common law and human rights convention relating to use of force Analyse the principles that under-pin use of force legislation

Critically examine the medical implications arising from the application of physical force and handcuff restraint techniques

Design and plan relevant lessons and appropriate work based scenarios in relation to physical intervention and handcuff restraint techniques

Analyse a range of strategies and concepts relating to personal management and tactical considerations

Critically examine issues relating to violence in the workplace

Critically evaluate the principles that under-pin the physical intervention and handcuff restraint training programme

Critically examine a spectrum of strategies and concepts relating to personal management

Analyse and develop the principles of stance, movement and proximity control

Critically evaluate and develop a range of safe and effective primary control skills

Critically evaluate and develop range of safe and effective secondary control skills

Compare and develop range of safe and effective breakaway techniques

Interpret the signs and symptoms of a range of medical conditions relating to use of force

Analyse and critically evaluate a range of handcuff restraint concepts and methods Design development appropriate programmes in relation to physical intervention and handcuff restraint.

Award Format

The award consists of two modular units both of which must be successfully completed in order to be awarded the Level 5 Award in the Delivery of Physical Intervention and Handcuff Restraint. The units have been devised under the following headings;

Unit 1: (30hrs distance learning)

Legal and medical implications in relation to physical Intervention and handcuff restraint techniques.

This unit is conducted on a distance learning basis whereby delegates will be required to research use of force legislation and related medical consideration. Delegates will be tasked to provide two written assignments and one presentation that will form part of the teaching assessment. Tutor support will be provided during the distance learning phase.

Unit 2: (40hrs classroom based)

Technical skills and under-pinning principles relating to physical intervention and handcuff restraint techniques

This unit will consolidate the research undertaken in unit 1 and introduce delegates to the concepts and skills required to teach safe and effective physical intervention and handcuff restraint skills.

Delegates will be taught how to deliver a range of primary control skills, pressure point applications and control and restraint including the use of handcuff skills. Additional techniques such as balance displacement methods, muscular dysfunction tactics and breakaway methods will also be taught.

Due to the nature of the subject being taught trainer to student ratio will be 1:6. Maximum course number will be set at 12.

Participant Profile

This programme has been specifically developed to address the issue of safe and competent training delivery in respect of physical intervention skills. Based upon well established practices and current legal and medical research, the course is ideally suited to those who deliver training to the security sector, police or government bodies or indeed any sector that runs the risk of violence towards staff.

Entry Requirements

Delegates wishing to enter this programme must submit the following evidence of prior learning:

Recognised teaching award

Level 2 Conflict Management Award or equivalent

Two industry references

Emergency first aid award or equivalent qualification

Experience in application of physical intervention skills

Additionally entry onto the course will require the delegate to supply evidence that they are medically fit to partake in moderate physical activity, practical ability to perform all techniques to the required level of competence will be required to successfully pass the award.

Those who satisfy the above requirements will be accepted onto the programme. All successful participants will receive a Level 5 Award in the Delivery of Physical Intervention and Handcuff Restraint. The award is accredited by ASET Awards.
